say ahhhh!

On Tuesday Grace had her 3rd dental appointment. She started going when she turned 2 and has been every 6 months since. She sees a wonderful pediatric dentist. Really, it's more so the hygienists that are so fabulous. They play "tickle your teeth," and even let her play with the tools! All of that plus a princess toothbrush and a special prize at the end (this time it was a pink jump rope). Needless to say, Grace loves to go!
I, on the other hand, was a little apprehensive this time... umm... petrified, yeah. A few months ago I noticed lots of dark browns lines on most of Grace's front teeth. I scrubbed and scrubbed since and they weren't fading. Had I let my child get cavities on every freakin tooth in her mouth?! I was scared to death and ready to accept the Terrible Mom of the Year Award for letting my little girl's teeth rot.
I had been dreading the appointment but was anxious for it at the same time. When the hygentist called Grace's name, I ignored the sign that asked parents to stay in the waiting room and marched right back beside Grace. I quickly explained my concerns and she looked inside. She suspected the brown lines were iron stains, common in children who take vitamins. After about 10 seconds of scrubbing with some pumice grit, Grace's teeth are pearly white again... whew! Supposedly the iron stains cause no harm, but I'm glad they're gone. Grace had another happy day at the dentist - no cavities!

1 month old!

Dear Marion,

Today you are one month old. Happy One-Month Birthday my sweet baby! One short month, but it feels as if you've been here forever. This evening we celebrated you turning one month old. We celebrated with a king cake, as Mardi Gras is only two days away. I've often said about your sister, "for Grace, the cake IS the party!" She proved it to be true; as ever since we ate the king cake tonight, she has been talking about how much fun she had "at Marion's party." She even blew out your candle. Little Grace loves you so much, I can't wait for you to get old enough to play together, while at the same time I know you'll grow way too fast.
I am already so proud of you! Although the nursing hasn't been easy, you're really gotten great at it now, if only my body will cooperate. You're also a wonderful sleeper. You wake twice at night to nurse, and after a diaper change you go right back to sleep. You have two periods during the day that you are very awake, one early in the morning right when we wake up, and one during the last few hours at night before we go to bed.
You are such a joy to us and we're so happy you are here!

Much love,
Mommy

feeling germy

We had big plans for today... a trip to Chuck E Cheese in Slidell for my niece's birthday party. Yes, I was going to take Baby Marion to Chuck E Cheese (gasp!). Some family that hadn't met her yet was going to be there and I thought it would be a good chance to get together.

Please don't worry about us picking up germs at The Cheese, we've already got them! After my much needed night out last night with a friend, Jeremy told me Grace had been a little cranky while I was away. This morning, she came into our room crying and burning up... at 100.5 degrees to be exact. We canceled our plans and are hanging out around the house today.

Grace is feeling a little better with a healthy dose of Tylenol and has yet to give up on The Cheese...

"Mommy, I got my furby out!!! I can go to Isabelle's birthday party!"

"Mommy, I got my fever and my germs out. I just got my coughs out, I washed them all out, and that's what I did, because I'm ready to go to Chuck E Cheese!"

"I feel better! I feel better! Pleaseeeee, can I go to Chuck E Cheese??"

I've promised to take her one day this week when she's feeling better. My poor baby!

As for me, after a few days of the nursing going great again, would you believe I'm feeling bad again?! I think it may be candida, which is common after a course of antibiotics. Really, the only thing keeping me going now is my stubborness! I'm trying some home remedies this weekend and if they don't work I'll be back at the doctor on Monday!

Valentine's Day 2009

Valentine's Day came and went last week without too much notice around here in the wake of my sickness. Grace came home from school everyday last week with a big new bag of candy. She also really got the idea of the holiday this year, as she told us several times that she had asked Benjamin to be her Valentine and he said "yes!"
Her school party was really exciting for her because mommy, daddy and "little sissy" all showed up to celebrate with her. Marion is such a little trooper, she slept through the entire party of wild 3 year olds!

I guess this means we're settled?

I guess we're feeling settled with the two kiddos. We've returned to our old ways...

Something in Jeremy and I just can't leave things well enough alone! Seems we always have some sort of home improvement project going on, any excuse to tear up the house and live in total chaos :). This time around it's the kitchen that's getting a much needed overhaul. I haven't liked the yucky brown cabinets since we moved in. Our builder gave us a story about how they were intended to be glazed and would look so good that way, yada, yada... well, we tried that and it looked like crap! We've decided to paint them white and then add a dark brown glaze. Jeremy's been at work for days and still has far to go. We'll see, pray for the best!

We're also adding tile to the backsplash, although we're going to leave that one to the professionals. My days of scrubbing spaghetti sauce off of the sheet rock will soon be over!

While I am definitely excited about the new look of my kitchen, the house is wrecked. Imagine all of the contents of my cabinets spread around the kitchen, living room and dining room... yep, disastrous. Grace has even found a favorite new toy amongst the chaos... the fondue pot!

rollin'

My kids aren't fans of "tummy time," I remember from when Grace was a baby...

Marion feels about the same way...

Of course, Grace put on a little more drama (some things never change!), but still, both children... clearly ticked.

Marion got so irritated today that she decided to do something about it... SHE ROLLED OVER!!! Yea Marion! Your first time rolling from your front to your back. She is 3 weeks and 2 days old today.

I got the action on film...

nursing... (insert BIG sigh)

So Julia, how's the nursing going??

Uhhh, it's kinda been a total roller coaster ride...

When I tried to nurse Marion at the hospital for the first time, I wasn't able to get her to latch at all... I called in the lactation nurse asap for help.

I was hopeful, but still a little doubtful after never being successful with Grace and succumbing to the pump. After all, not only did I wear these crazy breast shells while I was pregnant this time around, I was de-ter-mined!

The lactation nurse came in and worked with us for a while... she got it! Marion was latching on really well and staying on for a little bit.

Wow! I was thinking I was so set at this point. This time I must I gotten one of those babies I always hear about that latch on and never stop! I was elated!!

The lactation nurse was off Saturday through Monday, and it was as if Marion heard the door shut behind her as she headed out. My baby that I was lovingly calling "my little nurser" went on strike! Other nurses tried to get her to latch, but to no avail. My miracle worker lactation nurse called me on Saturday morning as I was preparing to leave the hospital. She said she would have another nurse bring me a "nipple shield" (it's basically a thin silicone circle with a HUGE fake nipple that's easier to latch onto than what I've got!) for me to take home just in case I wasn't able to get it going on my own.

I was definitely starting to get a little panicky at this point (but you know me, I love to worry ;) ) Does she look lethargic?? I surely thought so... but don't all newborns? Is her head sunken? Well I think so... but I suppose it's been like that all along. AHHH! Why is this so damn difficult!?

I stuck to it, no bottles, just kept trying. Marion just got crankier and crankier. Of course she was! She was hungry! I would say starving, although I know the doctor would disagree. On Sunday afternoon, day 4 of her little life, she had hardly eaten at all. My milk had come in in full force the day before and it made no difference. I couldn't take it anymore. It was time to break out the nipple shield. I was skeptical as to whether it would even work, but you what? It did! She latched right on, sucked like there was no tomorrow and turned into a happy baby with a full tummy.

Okay, at this point I was really excited, back on track! I had been so frustrated and now it seemed that all my problems were solved and we would be blissfully nursing for the next 12 months :)

She did nurse well with the shield, but it was kinda clumsy to get on sometimes, and also difficult at times to get her on. Over the next week and a half I tried at various times to transition her off of the shield and onto me. When she was 2 weeks old it finally worked!

YES!!!!! Not only was she now nursing, but totally on her own, no shield or anything!!! I even sent a few text messages to brag! This was really exciting stuff, and I had been working SO hard for it!

... and then came Monday evening. I started having chills and it basically progressed into me feeling like total death. A fever of 101.5, chills, sweats, shakes, MAJOR boob pain, especially when nursing, but really all the time. I even got a nice big rash accompanied by a hard lump that you could actually feel the heat radiating off of. I was actually dreading feeding poor Marion, it just hurt so bad. I felt fairly awful through the morning on Tuesday, but didn't call the doctor because I started to feel a little better by afternoon (can you tell I hate going to the doctor when I don't feel well?? such a hassel when you already feel like crap!). By night the chills were back and it started all over. Wednesday I went to the doctor and he confirmed what I already knew... mastitis. I've been on the antibiotics for over 24 hours now and I'm feeling much better.

As for the nursing... Marion is latching on well and staying on, but I lost a good bit of my supply while I was sick... hopefully it will improve. If the supply and demand theory proves true I should have an abundant supply soon... because she's given plenty of demand!

Yeah, it's been a challenge... still working on it!

getting out... with a little baggage

I made my first trip out by myself today with both my girls. It went great, although I did feel like I was rounding up and toting around A LOT of stuff. I guess I'll get used to carrying the heavy infant seat and wrangling the 3 year old that's trying to escape... all while keeping track of the ginormous purse that I'm calling a diaper bag.

We made it through Grace's gymnastics class without a peep from Marion, so I decided to risk it and go out to lunch. Success! She didn't peep through lunch either and we all made it home happy and safe! I'm making this look easy so far. :)

you be cinderella...

...because I'm Aurora, the pink one.

Yes, I know the box says 3 and up, but we supervise :) It's all part of being a princess in training!

Grace has started to learn the joys of having a sibling to play with...

Grace really loves being a big sister. She's gotten over the shock of a new baby being in the house and she's now asking to help with Marion all the time. She even insists on giving Marion her final wipe-down at diaper change time!

marion's first doctor appointment

Marion had her first doctor appointment today. She was just ever so slightly below her birth weight (she was 6 lbs., 12.5 oz today and 6 lbs., 12.8 oz at birth), which is great for being only 11 days old. The guideline is that they should be back up to birth weight by 2 weeks. I had been concerned that I thought she looked yellow, and Dr.Myers agreed that she was a little yellow, but not enough to warrant any action. She said it was normal for breastfed babies to be slightly yellow for up to 6 weeks.

Marion really changed today... she woke up! She stayed awake and alert for about 3 hours today. She really hadn't been staying up for more than 5 minutes before today! We had lots of fun playing with her... she really watched us and interacted for the first time!

a visit from the abercrombies

Saturday, the Abercrombies visited from Birmingham. We celebrated Christmas and Grace's birthday, so there were lots of gifts! Grace had a great time playing with everyone!

sister time

I've been trying to make Grace feel more involved with Marion to ease transistion. The girls have been having "sister time" every day together, where Grace reads stories to Marion and plays with baby toys with her. At first Grace was hesitant, but she now requests "sister time!"

the second child's first bath

So, while pregnant with Grace I made sure I was TOTALLY prepared. I bet I had everything in place and ready to go by month 5 of my pregnancy. We're definitely "winging it" more with Marion.

One day last week we decided it was time for her to have her first bath... one problem... we couldn't find our baby bathtub. I could have sworn I had just seen it... but I guess it had been about 3 years!

We held her over the sink and went for it!

"do these people know what they're doing?"

"hold your breath!"

she's so tiny!

fresh and clean!

Of course, I made a trip to Target so we were better prepared for bath number 2...
